With public opinion concerning the current war in Iraq waning to all-time lows, understanding the Vietnam War seems all the more important today. While there are more differences than similarities between the two conflicts, what remains constant is that (1) the U.S. armed forces got into a conflict for reasons that the American people did not necessarily understand, and (2) such a conflict could have been fought in other ways, resulting in fewer casualties. David L. Anderson's The Columbia Guide to the Vietnam War, which became available in paperback in 2004, is an attempt to explain to the reader the logic behind America's involvement in Indochina in the 1960s. While it is accessible to laypeople as well as academics, it would seem as though those conducting further research on the Vietnam War would get the most out of the guide's latter sections.
