Wakefield Court Roll

In 2011 UNESCO recognised the historical importance of the Wakefield manorial court rolls by including the archive in its United Kingdom Register of the Memory of the World. This extensive West Yorkshire manor stretched from Wakefield over more than 150 square miles to the county boundary on the Pennine moors and thus included some 50 townships of varied character. An edition of the earliest court rolls, covering the years between 1274 and 1297, was published by the Yorkshire Archaeological Society in 1900 and three more volumes soon followed. Then, in 1997, the society launched a new series of edited texts, of which this is the sixteenth. Its coverage of the rolls from October 1812 to September 1813 reflects the enormous time-span of this exceptional archive.
