On a remote sloping site situated at the foot of Dulan Mountains in the southeastern part of Taiwan, the architect designed his own house overlooking the Pacific Ocean to seek a way of dissolving private/professional life. As a freelance architect working alone in this rural area, the concept of bringing living and working back to nature became essential. The basic plan is a three-section courtyard house turned 90 degrees anticlockwise to a C- shape configuration which interacts with an elongated pool. The pool serves not only as an architectural element as transition, but also as a small reservoir to save the water obtained from a mountain stream two kilometers away.The idle house was articulated into three units to provide spatial flexibility. In correspondence with the existing character of the site, the rear unit, 1.5m above ground level, contains a garage and a workshop. The middle unit adjacent to the pool serves as a buffer zone providing multi-functional uses, while the front unit, intersecting with the pool, accommodates living and dining areas.
