The Folio Hotel in the Daan district of Taipei is a typical 'urban regeneration' project. It was previously a pair of 4-storey buildings comprises of 3LDK duplexes. Functionally, the private apartment spaces were converted to a hotel with public and commercial spaces. Our challenge of this project was to preserve the style and feeling of an old Taipei apartment, to give continuity to its memories, even as we try to breathe new life into the old structure.We first knocked down the tall boundary wall that surrounds and closes off the building. It is substituted with flower planters at different heights to help blur the boundary between outside and inside, allowing people to enter deep into the interior space both physically and visually.We retained most of the original building's structure, as well as the mosaics and granolithic finishes of its facade, attempting to preserve the original spatial dimensions and textures. In the narrow space between the two sections of the original walk-up apartment building, we added steel frames to support elevators, which is necessary for its use as a hotel.A void structure was created along the building facade, to produce a row of open-to-sky spaces of various sizes.
