After a sydney morning herald (SMH) article in March 2008, calling for a new opera theatre on a site away from Bennelong Point and querying the Sydney Opera House Trust proposal, for which no drawings have been published, I contacted the newspaper with an idea I had been considering and was asked to write an opinion piece. I said it was possible to have a new large opera theatre at the Sydney Opera House (SOH) site itself, on the eastern roundabout and extending into the Royal Botanic Gardens, which would be integrated operationally to the main building. Reactions were mostly enthusiastic and supportive. Some opposition assumed it was actually a design, as in the well-intentioned SMH graphic, but there is much more than that to designing an opera house. It seemed to be in the public interest to pursue a conceptual design and to analyse the latest SOH proposal, which involves the destroying and rebuilding of a significant asset: the present opera theatre.
