Computer-aided design (CAD), modelling and manufacturing technologies play a central role in science and industry for studying complex phenomena and manufacturing high-end products. Traditionally, informatics was considered a science preoccupied with the computer's hardware and software, whereas today's informatics increasingly also substitutes and supplements the methods and problem solving of other sciences. In this context, CAD serves decreasingly the representation of a priori determinable knowledge and methods, but increasingly their active generation. Traditional forms of scientific inquiry, such as physical experiments, are supplemented through computer-simulated experiments and models, which are opening alternative perspectives onto so far unperceivable and incomprehensible realities such as atomic networks, complex flow dynamics and unknown material structures. Increasingly mediated visions - mediatric constructs so to speak - rather than visions of what is presumed to be an ontological world, begin to influence scientific visualisation and analysis, and hence the comprehension and production of our so-called reality.
