Indian Panorama

The architectural panorama, redolent of the multiplicity of India, shows fresh latitudes and accents. With software/IT as the talisman of contemporary India, it is not surprising that the new architectural debate will centre on the dualism of the yogi and the techie. Peter Eisenman, in an early foray into the debate, proposed the design for a software company in Bangalore in the early 1990s through a tensional coalition between tradition and technology, which he attempted by warping the mandala through wobbly Cartesian grids. The convenient duality of the yogi versus the techie sublimates but does not fully dissolve a vast and nuanced middle ground in the architectural production of India today. Earlier imperatives for a regional architecture, seen in some of the brilliant work of Balkrishna Doshi, Charles Correa, Raj Rewal, Ranjit Sabikhi and others, are now replaced by various competing inclinations and desires.
