To consider seriously the title of this issue is to consider seriously the assumptions that we hold while carrying out our work. Part of the role of an architect is to be a generalist, who coordinates the work of specialists in many different fields. To do this we continually engage in what might be termed project-driven research. But it is not research in the academic sense, where it must be specified, directed, reviewed and funded. It is more a continual process of enquiry and experimentation that is both open-ended and cumulative. There are no watertight compartments. We build a body of knowledge by promoting specific awareness, but always within a more general context.
