Exploiting the algorithmic power of computers has been standard practice in manufacturing for more than 15 years, helping to make everything from small plastic toys to aircraft. In architecture, the possibilities of computer-aided design (CAD) have inspired the complex geometry of free-flowing glass canopies and ever more elaborate forms. But the home has rarely been seen as a set of components in the same way as a product or a complex megastructure. Design company Facit Homes is unusual in that it applies parametric and digital production methods to the creation of sustainable, 21st-century houses, an everyday challenge often overlooked by exponents of these technologies.
