Thank you for your invitation to our school reunion and my apologies I won't be able to attend. Our mixed use development on top of a train station in inner city Melbourne is stuck in Planning; we received 278 objections and are now working on a re-design. I have been practising in Victoria for a number of years now and looking back it has been a captivating journey. There was the language. On my first project I made a date with the engineer, very much to the amusement of my colleagues; 'appointment'is the appropriate word I found out. However, the date went well. The engineer was not a native English speaker either but we presented our drawings and made eye contact. There is a different sense of space and in our view an apparent lack of spatial hierarchy. A building is foremost an object in itself and the space it creates appears to be of somewhat lesser importance. I showed you a small suburban house once; a glass box with a large frameless sliding door that opened to an unattractive paling fence.
