David McGlashan and I graduated after the Second World War and were both interested in the Bauhaus tradition and the International Style. We were idealistic and enthusiastic about making an original contribution to architecture. We aimed to produce 'timeless' buildings that responded to our special southern Australian landscape and climate. In a sea of brick veneers, our vision for residential architecture was for modular and open planning, using a limited palette of materials and forms, walls of glass, and new details for shade and ventilation.
