Observation of anomalous phonons in orthorhombic rare-earth manganites

We observe the appearance of a phonon near the lock-in temperature in orthorhombic REMnO3 u0002REndenotes rare earthu0003u0002RE: Lu and Hou0003 and anomalous phonon hardening in orthorhombic LuMnO3.nThe anomalous phonon occurs at the onset of spontaneous polarization. No such changes werenfound in incommensurate orthorhombic DyMnO3. These observations directly reveal differentnelectric polarization mechanisms in the E-type and incommensurate-type orthorhombicnREMnO3.© 2010 American Institute of Physics. u0004doi:10.1063/1.3533022
