Switched reluctance motors can solve the problems of engineering H-axis washers for the unique demands of the U.S. market. The advantages of lower water usage combined with less wear and tear on clothes have made horizontal-axis washers the dominant technology in the European market. The decreased water usage of the H-axis method also saves energy, given that 70 percent of the energy used to wash a load in a vertical-axis machine is spent heating the water. It's that energy-saving potential that is expected to help ignite the demand for H-axis washers in the U.S. market. However, due to the U.S. consumers' demand for high-capacity appliances, designing H-axis washers for the U.S. is not a simple matter of transplanting European technology.
