Fenton-based chemical pre-treatment/remediation of poplar APMP pulping effluent

The effect of Fenton-based chemical pre-treatment/remediation in reducing the load of subsequent anaerobic treatment of poplar alkaline peroxide mechanical pulping (APMP) effluent was studied. The influence of initial pH, H_2O_2 and FeSO_4 dosages on the removal of COD_(cr) and colour of APMP pulping effluent were explored, indicating that the most appropriate conditions of Fenton-based chemical pre-treatment/remediation were initial pH of 4, H_2O_2 dose of 2.0 mL/L_(effluent), FeSO_4 dose of 2.4 g/L_(effluent), for a treatment time of 30 min. At these conditions the COD_(cr)and colour removal were at a maximum of 65.4% and 40.9%, respectively. Fenton-based chemical pre-treatment/remediation was significantly beneficial for the work of the subsequent anaerobic treatment. FT-IR analysis showed that the water-soluble components from the different chemical pre-treatments arising from the treatments in the APMP pulping process were similar and consequently had the same dissolution mechanism.
