Many in the apparel industry are well aware that radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology promises to replace bar code technology, but the extent of the replacement, and the perceived benefits, still seem vague in many respects. Adding to the confusion is the advent of a "technology upon technology," called Web-based RFID, which links supply chain partners to RFID information. The question arises: Is Web-based RFID simply the latest hype and glitz, or does it represent the future, offering tangible benefits to the apparel industry?
