Submarine enthusiasts are fond of repeating the soundbite that "there are only two types of warships, submarines and targets." While this remark is grossly overstated, there is a basic truth behind it that was starkly underlined when the South Korean corvette Cheonan was torpedoed and sunk by a North Korean coastal submarine. The circumstances and tactics used in this act showed it to be a case where the surface ship was little more than a convenient target for a hunting submarine.
