Tsunami and Statistics

I enjoyed reading your caring and compassionate letter in April's issue of Amstat News devoted to Tsunami and Statistics. You indicated there is much we can do as statisticians to take up Dr. Kalam's "charge," particularly when the knowledgeable President of India challenged us to use our discipline to help in the planning and managing of the disaster relief. You also graciously wrote that "I would love to hear from those of you who have done so." Your article especially impressed me, since we were also together in Hyderabad, India, as a part of an Environmental statistics forum to honor Professor C. R. Rao. Tsunami was on our minds throughout the conference and has been upon our return as well. You may like to know that NSF is giving me a supplemental grant for tsunami inundation risk mapping and evacuation planning, adding to my existing five-year NSF Digital Government Program Grant on Surveillance GeoInformatics of Hotspot Detection, Prioritization, and Early Warning that involves a large multi-individual, multi-institutional, multiagency, multidisciplinary group of concerned people.
