The shortage of MS and PhD statisticians is growing as the demand for their talent increases, but an encouraging trend is on the horizon. The undergraduate statistics major is becoming more popular among U.S. students who have the potential to go on to graduate work in statistics. The popularity of the statistics major among such students can be traced directly to the Advanced Placement (AP) statistics program. (Through the AP subject programs, high school students take college-level courses and a national AP exam in the subject at the end of the AP course. Good exam results allow students to earn college credit or advanced standing in the subject at most U.S. colleges and universities.
