The February 2008 issue begins volume 50 of Technometrics. The journal was launched in 1959 with J. Stuart Hunter as the editor and quickly achieved standing as a leading journal. We will celebrate this jubilee year with a number of special features. This issue begins with a history of the founding of Technometrics. Of the many who contributed to the process, Hunter and George Box stand out for their key roles in establishing Technometrics and making it one of the top statistics journals. In the process of preparing this article, Søren Bisgaard and I had the pleasure of visiting Hunter and Box and hearing their accounts of how the journal came to be.
