As soon as the verdict was announced, I knew becoming a statistician was the best decision I ever made. Judge Finch ordered a major auto manufacturer to recall 208,000 cars for excessive emissions all based on my statistical testimony and my sample of 10 cars. Yes, just 10 cars. It was a moment that illustrated the mind-boggling power of statistics; in this case, a basic statistical sampling plan to affect a cleaner environment. That's what it's all about: using statistical methods to improve die quality of life in terms of health care, transportation, security, economy, justice, education, the environment, and much more. This is the reason I would be honored to serve as the American Statistical Association's 112th president.
