The Metacatalyst: The Right Role for Private Equity in the Water Industry

Recently, as I was en route to a water resource symposium, I reviewed the main points of a presentation I was about to give. The algerian cab driver, curious about what I was reading, sagely tendered the now-well-heeled statement that water is the oil of the twenty-first century. Considering his roots, I reflected that he might well have a unique view of both substances as well as their respective scarcity and abundance. Certainly today's water industry bears many of the characteristics of the early oil industry, most prominently its unsustainable fragmentation.
