Managing water loss

In its "2005 Report Card for America's Infrastructure," the American Society of Civil Engineers states that "Each day, 6 billion gallons of clean, treated drinking water disappears, mostly due to old, leaky pipes and mains . . . enough water to serve the population of the state of California." Water leaks are a problem plaguing water systems nationwide, and one of the biggest challenges facing the United States is how to improve and maintain infrastructure for generations to come. American Water recognizes that many causes of water supply system loss exist. To fully understand the loss components of nonrevenue water (NRW), American Water has adopted the AWWA methodology of categorizing these losses.
