Additional time has also been granted for development and implementation of nutrient management plans (NMPs). Water suppliers withrnCAFOs in their watershed or wellhead protection area now have an opportunity to ensure that NMPs address potential source water pollutant contributions. CAFOs are a subset of animal feeding operations (AFOs) that are regulated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). AFOs are agricultural businesses in which animals are kept and raised in confined areas and where congregating animals, feed, manure, urine, dead animals, and production operations exist on a small land area. Rather than grazing on pastures or rangeland, feed is brought to the animals. Approximately 450,000 AFOs exist in the United States.
