AWWA's International Council Sees Multiple Opportunities for Global Expansion

Providing safe drinking water has posed significant challenges throughout the world's history. In 1881, 22 men formed an association with the goal of addressing these challenges. They focused on improving drinking water by working with water utilities in North America, but this new organization did not go unnoticed by water professionals around the world. Nor did the new organization confine its membership to North America. In 1887 at its annual meeting, held that year in Minneapolis, Minn., the organization's board of directors elected a water professional from Japan as its first international honorary member. This new organization? It was AWWA.
