In February 2010, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar signed an order establishing a water sustainability strategy for the United States. As part of this strategy, the US Geological Survey (USGS) Will embark on a national water availability and use assessment initiative that will include public investments in:rnDeveloping a nationwide system to deliver information about the water availability factors that every manager needs to know when dealing with availability questions. It will deliver information about precipitation and evapotranspiration, surface water runoff and baseflows, recharge to groundwater, and changing storage in aquifers. It will also account for the uses of water-withdrawals, other uses, and return flows as well as eco-logical needs for water.
