Coefficients for Estimating Landscape Area on Single-Family Residential Lots

摘要

Overwatering residential lawns and landscapes is a ubiquitous problem. One method to determine overwatering is by developing individual residential irrigation budgets. The process for developing these budgets begins with determining the size of the irrigated landscape. This article establishes a relationship between measured landscape area and appraised floor area for single-family lots. Official lot and floor area data were obtained from appraisal district records and related to landscape area for each corresponding lot derived using geographical information systems and orthoimagery. The average proportions of landscape area to lot area were generalized into a bivariate table of coefficients. Landscape area calculated using these coefficients was compared to values computed using approaches published in past literature. The findings of this study suggest that the coefficients offer a new and convenient, empirically based approach for estimating landscape area on single-family lots.
