For most of the twentieth century, changes in medicine were unquestioned, the public saw these changes as positive benefits, and abundant resources were dedicated to medical research and education. Physicians were paid increasing fees for "working miracles," and most of the public had insurance plans to ensure affordable access to care. During the past decade or two, however, things have changed.
