The pulling of ropes, men scrambling up ladders and hoisting themselves into the rafters, many pairs of hands rolling out scenery - these are all visions conjured up by the word theatre. But these laborious duties are part of an old-fashioned, romantic notion of theatre. These days much of theatre production is about the finely honed skills of engineers, architects and technicians who create state-of-the-art stage shows to keep the audience rooted to its seats.
