Inquiry starts into desalination project

Plans for the first water desalination plant on the UK mainland are being closely examined after the design was refined to help win over energy-conscious politicians. Thames Water's proposal to build the £200 million plant in Beckton, East London, was approved by the local council last year, but blocked by the Mayor of London's office. A five-week inquiry has now started.
