Here's a quiz question for two years' time. Which European country will, from 2008, produce more cars per head of population than any other nation in the world? The answer is Slovakia, the eastern half of what used to be the conjoined Czechoslovakia. It has no great reputation as an automotive hotspot. But from 2008, thanks to huge investments by Volkswagen (in its Skoda guise), PSA Peugeot-Citroeen and the Korean manufacturer Kia, a nation of five million people will produce 900,000 cars a year.
