It's not often that the much-praised design of the iPod is compared to a grunting and usually indistinguishable spectrometer. But Thermo Electron's latest emission spectrometer is aimed at revamping the image of this valuable tool in the same way that the iPod revolutionised portable music. The iCap 6000 series measures the concentration of metallic elements in a sample down to levels of parts per billion - that's what spectrometers do.
