Do Conditional Cash Transfers Improve Child Health? Evidence from PROGRESA's Control Randomized Experiment

One of the greatest tragedies of extreme poverty is its inter generational transmission Children who grow up in poor families tend to be in poorer health and have lower levels of education. They thus enter adulthood without "the basic capabilities" necessary to take advantage of labor-market opportunities to pull themselves out of poverty and to enjoy an acceptable quality of life (Amartya Sen, 1999). As a result, children from poor families begin life at a distinct disadvantage.
