AUSTRALIAN FLAG carrier Oantas has shelved plans to launch a series of new nonstop routes and will review its international fleet following the COVID-19 pandemic. Dubbed Project Sunrise, the original plan was intended to connect Australia's east coast cities to London/ Heathrow, Paris/Charles De Gaulle and New York/John F Kennedy using modified Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. The decision to suspend the project is a blow for Oantas, which had already invested significant resources into proving the concept by conducting three research flights last year. Alan Joyce, Qantas Group CEO, told Executive Traveller that the time was "not right" to continue with the project "given the impact COVID-19 has had on world travel... But we do think there's still a good business case for it, and a good opportunity."
