Bahrain can justly claim to be at the forefront of aviation development in the Middle East. It was the first Gulf country to be involved with commercial air travel, when in 1927 a group of pearl merchants chartered an airliner to fly them to Basra, Mesopotamia (Iraq). During the 19th Century, Bahrain entered into a series of treaties with the United Kingdom that resulted in the country becoming a British protectorate.
