US offers Bulgaria eight F-16 Block 70/72s

THE PENTAGON has announced details of its package of F-16C/D Block 70/72 fighters offered to Bulgaria. The US State Department has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale to Sofia of eight F-16C/ Ds as part of a deal worth around US$1.673bn. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) delivered the required certification notifying Congress of the possible sale on May 30. As well as the eight aircraft, it includes two spare engines, the Link 16 Multi-Functional Information Distribution System (MIDS) and AN/APG-83 active electronically scanned array (AESA) radars. Also included are modular mission computers and four AN/AAQ-33 Sniper targeting pods. Weapons involved comprise AIM-120C-7 AMRAAM and AIM-9X Sidewinder missiles plus GBU-49 Enhanced Paveway lls, GBU-54 Laser Joint Direct Attack Munitions and GBU-39 Small Diameter Bombs. The fighters would be equipped with AN/ALQ-211 Advanced Integrated Defensive Electronic Warfare Suites (AIDEWS) and AN/ALE-47 countermeasures dispensers.
