BERIEV HAS redelivered an additional upgraded A-50U airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft to the Vozdushno-Kosmicheskiye Sily Rossiyskoy Federatsii (VKS, Russian Aerospace Forces). The aircraft, Bort number '45 Red' (RF-93952, c 0093493818), was handed back to the service at Taganrog on December 6 after completing flight and ground tests. It was then flown by an air force crew to its permanent operational base at Ivanovo-Severnyi with the 144th APSDRLO (Airborne Early Warning Aviation Regiment) as part of the 12th VTAD (Military Transport Aircraft Division). This latest A-50U had been at Taganrog since 2017 and is the fifth such conversion to be completed. The extensive modernisation includes enhanced radar characteristics and use of much lighter radar components, while crew workstations have also been considerably improved. Beriev is working on additional A-50U upgrades, although it remains unclear how many will be acquired because the upgrade is an interim solution pending entry into service of the more advanced A-100, which is currently undergoing flight testing.
