Jing Xu, Air China's vice-managing director, says the airline wants to increase its portfolio of aircraft on operating lease. Xu told attendees at the Asia-Pacific Airfinance Conference that the airline has avoided operating leases such as sale/ leasebacks because of the high cost of such deals and prohibitive tax structures in China. However, she said the development of a stable aircraft leasing industry and potential tax reforms mean operating leases are now more viable. "With the development of the aircraft leasing industry and the tax policy reform the operating lease cost has already reached a sensible level for Air China so we are planning to increase sale and leasebacks into our financial structure," said Xu.
