Pneumatic Deice Systems

The combination of high performance, twin-engine piston aircraft, and the harsh winter months create a vast array of challenges for an aircraft's pneumatic surface deice system. Although these aircraft and their respective surface deice systems differ in shape and size, there are several common items that have been found to downgrade the performance of these systems. So, what are these items and how can they be avoided? Believe it or not, the proper operation of these particular systems begins with a schedule of regular maintenance inspections during the warm summer months. However, before discussing these recommended inspections in any detail, basic system operation must first be considered.
