The U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School, known as "Topgun," was founded on March 3, 1969. To mark its 50th anniversary, the author has assembled a coffee-table book (illustrated with more than 200 images) that shows how the image of the swaggering fighter pilot spilled into popular culture-from World War I to the present. The book contrasts the tales of real-life fighter pilots with the fictional ones depicted in comic books and films. And with the military's increasing use of drones, the book is a reminder that the era of the fighter pilot is finite.
