ABOUT A DECADE AGO, I was a DC 8 captain with ASTAR Air Cargo, flying a route between Wilmington, Ohio, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. One of the most challenging episodes of my career i happened late into the flight. I had been with the airline for 24 years. I flew seven years as a captain on the Boeing ! 727 before transitioning to the DC-8 in 1993. Experience, Fm convinced, is what enabled my crew and me to survive a December night flight that I have referred to in the years since as “the ambush”.
