ZIMBABWE Gombe Power calls on Sinohydro to return to the fold

In mid-September, Zimbabwean renewable energy firm Gombe Power Solutions asked the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) for a distribution permit for the construction of a 100 MW solar power plant in the province of Mashonaland West. Chinese state-owned firm Sinohyro is currently conducting a feasibility assessment of the 200-hectare site, west of Harare, and has contracted Gombe Power Solutions for the build. The project should ring in at an estimated $135 million. So far only the first 15 MW tranche is said to be covered with work to begin in 2019. Gombe’s South African-based parent company, Gombe Electrical Lines & Services, was created in 2010 by Zimbabwean engineer Mashoko Gombe with his brothers Tinashe Gombe and David Gombe. Mashoko Gombe worked for the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority for eight years and left the country in 2008. He founded his Zimbabwean subsidiary in 2016 and picked up several electricity installation and maintenance contracts.
