The once all-powerful director of Somalia's National Intelligence Service Agency (NISA), Fahad Yasin, will no longer be calling the shots in Mogadishu. As the country prepares to renew both houses of parliament and then elect a successor to President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, aka "Farmaajo", by the end of October, Yasin has announced he will be running for office in his home constituency of Beledweyne, Hirshabelle State. Yasin, a former Al-Jazeera journalist, has been Farmaajo's eyes and ears across the country for the past four years. He is reputedly close to Qatar, Farmaajo's main sponsor until recently, and was feared by many in Somalia until he came up against prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble in July in a spat that has taken a lasting toll on his influence.
