Gaborone seeks to sparkle in diamond processing

The business of cutting and polishing diamonds is fiercely competitive. To gain a foothold, Botswana is beefing up the capacity of the parastatal Okavango Diamond Company, which wants to soon sell 'Made in Botswana' gems. As the world's second largest diamond producer, Botswana is looking to carve out a place in processing the gemstones. Driven by President Mokgweetsi Masisi's economic agenda, the state-owned Okavango Diamond Company (ODC) is currently working to launch a sales platform for polished diamonds from Botswana's factories. ODC sells 15% of the rough diamonds from the mines of Debswana, a 50/50 joint venture between the state and industry giant De Beers.
