A method for producing an absorbent structure is described by Paul Hartmann. Detailed in US Patent 7 462 754, the innovative process comprises:rn1.introducing a thermoplastic polymer into an extrusion apparatus;rn2.melting the thermoplastic polymer material having a moisture content of at least 0.5 wt% (preferably 4 wt%) into the extrusion apparatus;rn3.extruding the mixture such that the fluid in the granular, particulate superabsorbent polymer (SAP) material evaporates as pressure is released and induces foaming of the (lower melting point) thermoplastic polymer that bonds the particulate polymer material together to create a matrix.
