A yarn based on fine aramid filaments made its debut at the Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT Show) and Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, 17-20 January 2012. Teijin Aramid of Arnhem, The Netherlands, claims its new lightweight yarn, called Twaron 550f 1000, is based on the finest aramid filament in the world and has the highest tenacity in combination with breaking strength in its portfolio, which the company claims is the broadest available. The high degree of performance of Twaron 550f 1000 results from it being made from 1000 filaments. The yarn is designed for use in soft anti-ballistic products for the police and military markets, where the current needs are for lightweight and comfortable bulletproof vests that comply with strict safety regulations. When woven, the yarn produces fabrics that have excellent resistance to bomb fragments and offer good protection from bullets. It can also be used in fabrics that protect the wearer from stab attacks.
