Seismic Performance of Reinforced Concrete Eccentric Beam-Column Connections with Floor Slabs

This paper presents test results of two eccentric beam-column connections with slabs subjected to simulated seismic loading. The research presents some valuable information for the design of eccentric beam-column joints with floor slabs. The discusser also did some research regarding the seismic behavior of beam-column joints before, and would like to provide some opinions for the paper: 1. Significant bond slip of bottom beam bars in the joint region likely occurred and contributed to comparable portion of the loss of story shear in both specimens. This is based on some evidence observed in the test results. First, the hysteresis loops of both specimens show significant pinching. Second, significant cracking and spalling of concrete at the bottom of the beams adjacent to the column faces occurred in both specimens (refer to Fig. 9 in the paper). This is resulted from bond breakdown of bottom beam bars in which the forces are in tension on both sides of the column. In turn, the compressive stress of the concrete stress block at the bottom of the beam would increase significantly and eventually crush and spall off.
