In an attempt to get their quota of recruits, the Big Four have taken extreme measures, including parking mobile poster signs outside rival office buildings and even going as far as getting inside those buildings by advertising on sandwich wrappers. Within this competitive environment the Big Four are struggling to find the right sort of candidates as they look to take on hundreds, in some cases thousands, of new staff. The mid-tier firms have also expressed their intention to take on new recruits as the economy improves and the onset of regulation and new accounting standards become an increasing burden to deal with. Matthew Leedham, recruitment consultant in the executive division at Michael Page, stresses: 'There is heavy competition between the Big Four for new recruits, given what their demands are particularly at the newly qualified level.' Charles Macleod, UK head of recruitment at PricewaterhouseCoopers, said that the firm had taken on 550 people in just one day.'It is that time of the year where students are coming out of the academic environment, having a break and then starting their careers at the beginning of September. 'We are also recruiting about 100 people a month of a more experienced nature. We have been very successful with our recruitment campaign.'
