The budgets handled by the RAF's most senior military accountant, Group Captain Sam Ulhaq, would send any civilian into a flat spin. He tells Liz Fisher about working in the armed forces. I've met some enthusiastic security guards in my time but I can safely say that this is the first time I've ever had to walk past a man with a gun in order to interview an accountant. The security screening at RAF Strike Command is polite, but extraordinarily thorough. We are checked, photographed, rechecked, issued with colour-coded passes and fully escorted to one of several blocks of offices which, were it not for the uniforms and 8ft fence, could pass for any other administrative department. An officer in full uniform cycles past; I feel like I've wandered on to the set of Reach for the Sky.
