The European Commission has backed plans from 10 member states to introduce a financial transaction tax (hi I) by confirming that all the legal conditions for such a move are met. An hi I would see a small charge levied on transactions in shares, bonds and derivatives traded at financial institutions. The Commission is proposing that a levy of 0.1 % will apply to shares and bonds, and 0.01 % on derivatives.
