KIDS COMPANY FAILURE TO IMPLEMENT INDEPENDENT PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

A National Audit Office (NAO) investigation into the collapsed Kids Company charity show it received at least £46m in public sector money over 15 years and was routinely using government grants, some awarded without a competitive process, to manage its cashflow, while performance was monitored through its own self-assessments. The watchdog said officials raised concerns about the charity's cashflow and financial sustainability at least six times between 2002 and 2015 but the charity never reached a position where it could operate without government assistance. Kids Company recorded government grant income in its accounts for every year since 2001 and received at least £42m in central government grants before becoming insolvent in August 2015. At least seven central government departments made contributions between 2000 and 2015, along with £2m in funding from local government between 2002 and 2013 and £2m from Lottery bodies.
